Copying and Restoration of Old Glass Plate, Film Negatives, Photographs, and Documents with Fred Bird Photography

Fred Bird, owner of Fred Bird Photography will present a lecture entitled, Copying and Restoration of Old Glass Plate, Film Negatives, Photographs, and Documents. This lecture will cover the handling of glass negative plates so they are not destroyed. The old glass plates are very fragile and they should be held while applying support on all sides. Patrons will acquire an understanding on how each item is copied and how the restoration of the prints and documents is accomplished. Fred will also touch upon the decisions in restoring photographs, how much is too much and do you want the print to look new or keep some of its old time charm.

Fred Bird's experience with photography began forty years ago while working on his high school year book, and continued when he worked in aerial surveillance during his three years with the U.S. Army. Fred then worked with the Connecticut State Police for twenty two years as a trooper and a sergeant. During his time with the Connecticut State Police, Fred also operated a part time wedding/portrait studio, but his employment with a state service caused a conflict of interest with many of his commercial/legal photographic assignments. Not one to be deterred, Fred attended many photography schools and seminars, as well as several classes in photography, while working on getting his bachelor's degree in police science from the University of New Haven. When Fred retired in 1986, he opened Fred Bird Photography in Ellington, Connecticut, a full service commercial studio working in the areas of Industrial, Commercial, Legal and Aerial photography.
