History of the Stars & Stripes with James Meehan

The History of the Stars and Stripes, presented by James Meehan, shows examples of some of America's earliest flags and explains the symbolism and history behind these designs. The presentation timeline begins on June 14, 1777 and features the flag's role in historical events throughout the 21st century, as well as its application to American painting, photography, and commercial arts.

James Meehan was born and raised in the 'Silver Cig"— Meriden, Connecticut — where his great-great grandparents Bridget and Michael Meehan settled in 1848. It was the stories he heard about Pfc. Michael Meehan at the battle of Bull Run and the advance of Richmond during the Civil War that sparked his interest in Genealogy and American History at the early age of nine years. With a passion for Art as well, his interests brought him to the New Haven area, where he graduated from Paier College of Art and spent the next forty-seven years as a Graphic Designer servicing Product, Service, and Financial Institutions throughout New England. In 2003 James and his wife Mary Evelyn Greene moved to Old Saybrook — an ideal location to continue the pursuit of local history, watercolor, photography and the business of design. In 2009 he began working with the Old Lyme Historical Society on the design and development of their Book Publication and Collateral Materials, and has been serving on the OLHSI Board of Trustees since 2017.
